This school-based program encourages moderate to vigorous physical activity among middle school girls. During the 17 week intervention period, girls meet with the school nurse for 2 motivational interviewing-based sessions, attend a daily exercise 'club' after school, and receive a tailored program delivered on iPads.
The purpose of this school-based cluster randomized controlled trial (RCT) is to test the efficacy of our intervention to increase moderate to vigorous physical activity among middle school girls.
Participants are recruited from 24 schools in Michigan. Half of the schools are randomized to the control condition and half are randomized to the intervention condition. Participants include 6th and 7th grade girls (ages 10-13; 8th graders are included in cases where a middle school has only 7th and 8th grades). Girls must be available and willing to participate in the physical activity club 4 days a week for 6 months; available for follow-up (9 mos. after intervention ends); agree to random assignment; and be able to read, understand, and speak English.
