  1. To determine the efficacy of providing individually tailored smoking cessation messages as part of an online college life website.
  2. To determine the efficacy of providing individually tailored smoking cessation messages plus email-based peer support as part of an online college life website.

Students enrolled in a 4-year college within the United States who report any smoking in the prior 30-days are recruited via an online health screening (n=1500).

Students will be recruited via the web (Facebook and MySpace ads, google search ads). Students who participate are randomized into one of three study arms to receive access to an online college life website, updated with new content each week, for 22 weeks:

  • Group 1: weekly email invitation to visit site; untailored health education content (smoking, alcohol use, eating breakfast, exercise, overall wellness related to being a college student); weekly untailored follow-up email.
  • Group 2: weekly email invitation to visit site; check-in survey upon logging into site (about prior week's habits); tailored health education content (smoking, alcohol use, eating breakfast, exercise, overall wellness related to being a college student); tailored interactive components such as quizzes and videos; weekly tailored follow-up email.
  • Group 3: same as Group 2 PLUS weekly tailored follow-up ePal peer support contact via a choice of email/IM/phone/text message (the student is encouraged to interact with ePal for additional support beyond website).

Tailoring is based on data collected at baseline, weekly check-ins, and 3-months. The primary outcome is thirty-day self-report abstinence from cigarette smoking at six months.
