Breast Cancer Informed Consent

by admin last modified 2008-05-08 11:04

This project aims to create an updated, user-friendly information booklet about breast cancer treatment options. The booklet, "Breast Cancer: What you need to know before treatment" is out of date and text heavy. Based on the Public Act 195 of 1986 that requires physicians to distribute this booklet to newly diagnosed breast cancer patients, it is necessary to update the booklet to reflect the current state of treatment options to help each person make the best treatment choice for themselves.

  1. Create booklet layout, incorporate draft content & develop illustrations.
  2. Use focus groups to provide feedback on draft booklet.
  3. Revise booklet as needed, print and deliver final booklet, as well as booklet order form, for distribution to MDCH, BCAC, and MCC.

Individuals who have recently been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Developed in conjunction with the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) in response to the Breast Cancer Informed Consent Law (Public Act 195 of 1986), the Breast Cancer: What You Need to Know Before Treatment booklet provides newly diagnosed breast cancer patients with information about the treatment options that are available in order to help each person make the best treatment choice for themselves.

Also included is information about this disease (anatomy, risks associated with, diagnosis and types of cancer), as well as post-treatment care (screening recommendations, self examination information, coping suggestions and support services). The Public Act, as amended, requires Michigan physicians to provide this brochure to all persons who have been diagnosed as having breast cancer.

MDCH will work with the Health Media Research Laboratory to create an updated user-friendly version of the booklet. The goal is to make the brochure less text heavy, lower the literacy level, revise the content to relay the most up-to-date information about breast cancer treatments, and develop illustrations to help visually demonstrate primary points within the booklet.

The project will begin by creating a draft of the new booklet. Focus groups will review the draft, and provide feedback for revisions. A final booklet will be produced for distribution to various health organizations throughout Michigan. These organizations will deliver booklets to physicians in the state, along with order forms for physicians to order more booklets as needed.

This project was not a study. There are no findings to report.
