This project aims to develop an oral health and tobacco cessation training and education module for primary care providers who provide health care at Voices of Detroit Initiative (VODI) clinic sites. The training and education module will be made available via CD-ROM to the providers.

- Develop CD-ROM intervention to train providers on oral health exams and tobacco cessation counseling and treatment.
- Implement interactive smoking cessation educational intervention on 5-6 kiosks at VODI clinic sites.
Primary care providers (physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants as well as their staff) at Voices of Detroit Initiative (VODI) clinics.
Before developing the CD-ROM for the VODI primary care providers, the team will complete the following development steps:
- Organize focus group with VODI primary care providers to explain program plans, discuss content areas and define outcome measures for the program.
- Develop content and solicit feedback from VODI primary care providers and dental experts.
- Develop program.
- Organize focus group with VODI primary care providers to solicit feedback on program development.
- Complete CD development including feedback from focus group participants.
The Oral Health and Tobacco in a Primary Care Setting CD-ROM will provide information for primary care providers about:
- Definition and screening for signs and symptoms of
- Dental caries
- Periodontal diseases
- Oral cancer
- Prevention of oral diseases and conditions
- Referral for dental care
- Tobacco cessation
- Pre-screening forms and algorithms
- Screening forms
- How to screen and provide preventive advice including tobacco cessation
Each topic will be introduced by an individual (reading from a script), highlighting the main points of the topic and what information can be found within the topic. Each topic will have submenus that provide in-depth training and education. When appropriate, topics will include Detroit-area specific information, including local cessation resources and contacts for the Detroit Oral Health Network. Each section will have printable fact sheets and worksheets for the provider, as well as handouts that can be given to VODI patients.
