Project Overview +

BMi2 is a DVD for pediatricians and dietitians that have completed a 2-day intensive motivational interviewing (MI) training session. The DVD is a take-home resource that offers additional practice in the core MI skills of reflective listening, building motivation, and eliciting change talk. In this DVD, the application of MI is used to help prevent and treat pediatric obesity, including nuances of working with parents of young children as well as working directly with older children.

Aims +

Produce a DVD Booster that provides additional motivational interviewing practice for pediatricians and nutritionists who undergo MI training.

Participants +

A selected group of pediatric practices (four Pediatric Research in Office Settings chapters) that counsel at-risk children and their parents about nutrition and physical activity during office visits.

Intervention +

The MI DVD Booster is part of a larger project that includes a 2-day intensive workshop to teach pediatricians and dieticians how to use Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques when counseling parents of children who are either obese or at-risk.

To enhance skill acquisition and reduce the misapplication of MI over time, additional training and practice beyond the initial two-day in-person training is required. A DVD designed for pediatricians and dietitians offers additional practice in the core MI skills of reflective listening, building motivation, and eliciting change talk.

The DVD demonstrates a range of full clinical scenarios relevant to the project using both simulated (standardized) and real patients. These scenarios demonstrate strong MI skills, although for comparison purposes also includes at least one "standard" session with predominantly MI inconsistent skills, e.g., close-ended questions, unsolicited advice and information, ignoring emotional statements, and poor elicitation of client response.
