Phillip S. Schoenfeld, MD, MEd, MSc

 

Dr. Phillip Schoenfeld is Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of the GI Epidemiology Training Program at the University of Michigan School of Medicine. He completed his Master's degree in Medical Education at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education in Philadelphia and his Master's degree in Clinical Epidemiology at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.

Dr. Schoenfeld's research focuses on optimizing colon cancer screening and prevention with colonoscopy, the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome, and the application of evidence-based medicine to management of gastrointestinal disorders.

He is the Editor of the Selected Summary Section of the journal GASTROENTEROLOGY, past Associate Editor (colon section) of the American Journal of Gastroenterology, and has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology, Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics, and Gastroenterology & Hepatology. He is past chair of the Education Committee and of the Clinical Practice Section of the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), past chair of the Public Relations Committee of the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG), and course director for the AGA Spring Postgraduate Course 2003 and AGA Postgraduate Course on Evidence Based Gastroenterology at the 2005 World Congress of Gastroenterology.

Dr. Schoenfeld has edited series on evidence based medicine in the journals Gastroenterology, Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and the American Journal of Gastroenterology. He is the co-author of the American College of Gastroenterology's Evidence Based Monographs on the Management of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (2009), Management of Chronic Constipation (2005), and Guideline on Colon Cancer Screening 2008. He has published more than 100 original research articles, reviews, and book chapters about colon cancer screening, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, outcomes research and evidence-based medicine in academic journals, and his articles have been published in the New England Journal of Medicine, Annals of Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, and the American Journal of Gastroenterology.
