Jennifer Elston Lafata, PhD


Jennifer Elston Lafata, Ph.D. is professor in the Department of Social and Behavioral Health in the School of Medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) where she is also co-leader of the Cancer Prevention and Control Program at the NCI-Designated Massey Cancer Center. She also has an appointment in the Center for Health Policy and Health Services Research at the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, MI.

Dr. Lafata's training is in health services research, and her current research is focused on the use of mixed methods to study patient-physician decision making and its impact on health services use, primarily in the area of colorectal cancer control and prevention. She has been involved with a number of practice-based, trials evaluating interventions designed to improve colorectal cancer screening decision making in primary care. Through these and other efforts, she has extensive experience working with delivery and financing organizations to develop, implement, and evaluate interventions designed to improve cancer control and routine chronic care management.
