Block A grouping of commands with common logic. Use blocks to simplify logic so you can more easily scan your document to read the rules.        
Characteristic A unit of participant information used in message logic that directs the MTS Engine to choose only certain messages for participants. If you tailor on gender, gender is the characteristic.    
Class Class allows you to override the HTML class used by the MTS Engine when it produces tailored outptut. A web designer could help with this feature.      
Codebook Former name for Dictionary.      
Command Type Commands define each row in your message document and instruct the MTS Engine what to do with the information in each row. Commands are either Containers or Objects.      
Comment A Workbench command used to make notations about the message document. "This section talks about barriers to smoking and benefits of quitting"      
Container1 Message Document containers hold tailored messages. Examples include Section, Block, List, List Random, Select, and Select Random.      
Container 2 Page layout containers are the destination of tailored messages and images.      
Control Panel A pane in the Workbench to define the project, testcases, and messages to preview.        
Custom Substitution User-defined rules to replace the text of a value often used to fit the grammatical structure of a message. See also Direct Substitution. basketball → “playing basketball”; Female → “her”, “she”, or woman; Male → “him”, "he", or man    
Derived Characteristic Calculated using the values of other characteristics. BMI is derived from weight and height    
Dictionary Workbench component to define tailoring characterstics and values.      
Dictionary Viewer A "quick reference" pane to see a summary of characteristics and values.    
Direct Substitution The MTS Engine uses the verbatim response from a field and enters it into a sentence. See also Custom Substitution verbatim use participant's name        
Engine Part of MTS which uses data, rules, and logic from the Dictionary, Testcases, Message documents to direct the correct tailored messages into Preview and the Publisher.        
Graphic A Workbench command that tells the MTS Engine which tailored graphic should appear based on its logic. images mattched to the users age, race, and gender      
Group A Workbench action that groups a set of rows into a Container. You can Group As... Block, Select, Select Random, List, or List Random.      
Heading A Workbench command that formats a message using HTML heading tags. In the tag column, specify your heading style by typing H1, H2, H3, H4, H5, or H6. Note: If you use the MTS Publisher Templates, you do not need to specify a heading style in the Tag Column; they are automatically built into the templates.      
Keywords A function in the Tags panel to add user-defined categories to characteristics. Can be assigened to each characteristic or a group . Helpful for categorizing similar characteristics (e.g., demographic questions) so they can be sorted and searched. Especially helpful for very large dictionaries.      
List A Workbench command that formats messages by inserting a bullet, indenting the text, and inserting a return before the next bullet. To limit the number of messages that will fire, enter a number into the # column. Selected messages appear in the order in which they are written.      
List Random Like the List command, but the messages are chosen in random order.      
Logic A rule, or set of rules, the MTS Engine evaluates to determine if a Command (e.g., text, image, etc) is used or not. Gender=="Female" (tailoring engine selects "As a woman…")"As a woman…")

Multiple Response Question Questions (and characterstics) that can have more than one value. multitple choice - multiple response (choose all that apply from a list)      
Object Elements or content held within Containers. Examples include Text, Graphic, Heading, Paragraph. Objects are held in a container when they are below a container and indented one level in a message document.      
Paragraph A Workbench command that inserts a blank line between two messages.      
Preview Workbench component to test the accuracy of tailoring logic.      
Project The name for a set of message documents, dictionary(ies), and testcases organized into one folder in the Project Explorer.      
Project Explorer A pane in the Workbench to organize project files.        
Publisher Workbench component that inserts tailored messages and images into themed graphical templates.      
Section The top level container allowing a writer to organize all commands (Block, Select, SelectRandom, List, ListRandom, Graphic, Text, Heading) related to a particular topic or page layout container. e.g., welcome page, sidebar, main text       
Select A Workbench command that chooses a specified number of valid messages in the order in which they are listed. To limit messages, enter the desired number in the # column of the message document.      
Select Random Like the Select command, but the messages are chosen in random order.      
Single Response Question Questions (and characterstics) that can have only one value. yes/no; multiple choice – single response (choose one item from a list); fill in the blank; likert-type      
Source A function the Tags panel to identify the data source of a characteristic. Helpful when asking the same set of characteristic questions multiple times, elliciting different responses, e.g., a weekly survey on food intake or current weight.

Substitution Text What the MTS Engine uses verbatim in a tailored sentence. See also Custom Substitution and Direct Substitution "man" (all lower case) substitutes "Male" (as it appears in survey) becuase it's going to appear in the middle of a sentence.    
Survey Question The question in survey that corresonds to a characteristic that is being added or edited. Optionally specified when defining a characterisic in the Basic Details view. What is your marital status?      
Survey Text The text as it would appear in a survey's response choice. Your value may be "NeverMarried," but in a survey, a user sees "Single, never married",      
Tag1 Tag allows you to override the HTML tag used by the MTS Engine when it produces tailored output. A web designer could help with this feature.      
Tag2 A function in the Dictionary used to "tag" certain characteristics or groups of characteristics that may have a commonality. Can be tagged by Source or Keyword. Helps when you want to sort and search your list of characteristics (e.g., all dealing with demographic questions).      
Tailored Message A message for only those who answered a question in a certain way or with certain characteristics (as defined by a rule in the Logic column).      
Testcase A set of data representing a hypothetical project participant.    
Testcase Editor Using characteristics and values defined in the Dictionairy, the testcase editor allows you to fill in data for a hypothetical project participant and preview specific tailored messages.    
Text1 1. A Value Type that contains letters or numbers. In the Workbench's Logic column, text Value Types require quotes around them and can not be compared to each other using < or >. (In statistics, this would also be referred to as "categorical data.")      
Text2 2. A Workbench command that includes the text to appear in tailored and untailored messages.      
Untailored Message A message that is not restricted to appear only to certain people (as defined by a rule in the Logic column)      
Value The valid options for a characteristic. If your characteristic is gender, its values are “Male” and “Female.”    
Value Types Values can be expressed as text (see Text1), numbers with or without decimals, or dates.      
Workbench Part of MTS in which to define tailoring characterstics and values (in the Dictionary), definte testcases (Testcase Editor), and write, preview, and publish tailored messages (in a Message Document, Preview, and Publisher, respectively).
