What Do You Tailor On?

What Do You Tailor On?
Anything you feel is appropriate for your intervention. Theoretical constructs will help frame your message, but you will still need to ask the right questions in your assessment to deliver powerful messages that can have an impact. The table below illustrates variables used to generate tailored messages in a smoking cessation program.

Variable Message linked to variable
Name Dan,
StageOfChange=Preparer, QuitDate=May 1 you have decided that you are ready to quit smoking and have chosen May 1st as the day to set aside your cigarettes for good.
HealthCond=Diabetes That's great news when it comes to helping you manage your health. Did you know that smoking raises your blood glucose level? By quitting, you may make it easier to control your diabetes.
Married, Children=Yes, FamilySupport=Yes As you get ready for the 1st, it's time to draw on those around you to help you succeed. Take advantage of the support you told us that your wife and children will provide as you go through this process.
Enrollee=OnlySmokerInHome It's helpful that you are the only one who curently smokes in your home. Once you quit, the temptation of others smoking there won't be an issue for you.
Barrier=SmokeAfterMeals You do need to prepare for what to do after meals though. You told us that it will be one of the most difficult things you think you will face once you quit. Try some of these alternatives: leave the table immediately if you smoke there; don't go to the place where you normally smoke; get up and do the dishes; go brush your teeth; use a mint flavored toothpick; go for a walk.
Married=Yes, FamilySupport=Yes Make sure your wife knows this could be a problem for you. What are some things you would like her to do to help you? Share your ideas so she can be by your side.
Children=Yes How can your kids play a role? You could help them with homework or play a game together. If nothing else, remind yourself about the amazing example you are setting for them to help keep you on track.
